Michael Jackson fans are leaving X in masses

Michael Jackson’s legacy as a champion of unity, equality, and social justice continues to inspire fans, even in today’s digital age. As platforms like X (formerly Twitter) face debate over whether it is a true platform for free speech or a network for divisive rhetoric, many Michael Jackson fans have found a home elsewhere on platforms like BlueSky—a decentralised network that prioritises user empowerment and claims to offer a healthier conversation.

Michael Jackson’s artistry is consistently addressed social and political issues. From the introspective Man in the Mirror to the direct They Don’t Care About Us, his music and humanitarian efforts often encouraged individuals to stand against injustice and work towards meaningful change.

“Michael would never tolerate a platform where hate speech or misinformation thrives unchecked,” says one fan on a BlueSky discussion board. “He believed in using his voice for good, and I think he’d support spaces where positive, honest conversations can happen.”

However, others believe that Michael would prefer the option to express oneself freely on platforms like X, in the name of pushing back against the system.

Fans often debate how Michael Jackson’s commitment to unity would translate in the modern digital landscape. Would he have joined social media platforms or would he have allowed his team to handle his voice to the world, which hadn’t always worked out so well for him in the past.

BlueSky, developed with the promise of decentralisation and transparency, is rapidly gaining attention from users seeking an alternative to X. Many MJ fans have had a negative experience with X, particularly in light of 2019 and with X’s mission to seemingly remove some of the safeguarding protections in the name of ‘free speech’, there’s been a quiet exodus by many of Michael’s fans to BlueSky.

“Michael’s work was always about giving people a voice—whether it was marginalized communities, children, or the planet itself,” one user shared in a fan group discussion. “Platforms like BlueSky feel more aligned with that vision. They’re about empowering the individual, not amplifying the loudest or most harmful voices.”

Fans also note that BlueSky’s community-driven ethos reflects Michael Jackson’s message of building a better, more inclusive world. “It’s about changing the narrative,” another fan commented. “If Michael were here today, he’d want us to create spaces where kindness and truth prevail.”

While it’s impossible to know how Michael Jackson would have engaged with social media, fans often imagine that his approach would have been deliberate and meaningful. Some argue that Michael would have avoided social media entirely, preferring to focus on music and philanthropy. Others suggest he might have used platforms as a megaphone for change, carefully curating his presence to promote unity and activism.

Regardless of the medium, fans agree that his values remain relevant in today’s fractured digital landscape. “His songs were calls to action,” one longtime fan wrote in a blog post. “They encouraged us to think about our role in the world. I think that’s the mindset we need to bring to platforms like BlueSky.”

For MJ fans, the rise of platforms like BlueSky isn’t just about technological innovation—it’s an opportunity to carry forward a message of unity and change in an increasingly divided world and also defy what X has became since Elon Musk purchased the social media platform.

It’s also an opportunity for a reset, allowing many fans to ‘start again’, avoiding the in- and the out- fighting that has taken place over the years. It also gives rise to quieter voices in the fan community who have been overshadowed. We’ve all started from zero and it allows different fans to shine through.

No matter the reasons—whether political or social—a large number of Michael Jackson fans have now moved to BlueSky. Some have canceled their X accounts, while others are maintaining a presence on both platforms. Is BlueSky the new social media platform where fans can truly be themselves, or will it be just a phase like Threads, or worse, turn into a toxic environment like X has become?

It is up to you!
