Abandoned coliseum where the Jacksons kicked off the Triumph Tour

Memphis’ first racially integrated arena is left in despair since 2006.

Broken roof tops, bottles of beer still in fridges, packets of salted peanuts left on the floor, it’s like time has stopped and feel like the set of a zombie horror movie.

Have a look at the inside which was filmed 3 years ago:

The coliseum opened in 1963 and saw A-list musicians to have performed there include Prince, Frank Sinatra, Van Halen, Ike and Tina Turner, Ozzy Osborne, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Jay-Z, The Beatles and Elvis.

Michael Jackson along with The Jacksons kicked off their Triumph Tour by performing at the arena on July 8th, 1981.

The tour grossed a total of $5.5 million, setting a record breaking four sold out concerts in Inglewood, California, just southwest of Los Angeles.

Current plans recommend the coliseum to be demolished after a proposal from Memphis Mayor Jim Strikland to build a new stadium for the Memphis 901 FC professional football team. Some organisations and lovers of the coliseum are still fighting to save it.

So if you are in Memphis on a visit, stop by as it might be soon gone…
