Last year, a Jackson 5 mural was destroyed due to construction development.
Another one of Gary’s tribute mural to the home musical group is currently being demolished. It was painted by local artist Felix Maldonado and Maldonado’s image on a brick building in the 600 block of Broadway was the largest in Northwest Indiana.
Last year, Meg Roman, executive director of the Miller Beach Arts and Creative District, said the organization owns the building, but hopes to demolish it when it raises enough funding.
“It’s iconic. People take photos every day,” she said of the mural. It’s been up for four years, but she said the particle board surface is chipping and flaking, fading the mural.
She said the pending building demolition has nothing to do with allegations against Michael Jackson.
With COVID-19 and the financial state of the town, Gary is in a very bad shape! Last week, we reported that Michael’s Elementary school was left in despair and this is the case for many other buildings in the city. Not to mention that reports show that people are fleeing the county due to the high unemployment rate, raise of criminal activity and poverty.
Gary is on the US list of becoming a ghost town unless authorities find a solution to save it!
