A filmmaker is looking to make a documentary about the history of Gary to paint the city in a more positive light.
Gary native Brandon “Billboard Bee” Bowens made a 8-minute-45-second-long trailer called “The Story Within the Story: Gary, IN.” He released the preview, which features panoramic shots of the city, historical footage, news reports and the street vendor Sirmack playing harmonica, on GoFundMe.
Bowens is looking to raise $8,264 on the crowdfunding site for the documentary film “Gary, IN” so he can purchase more archived footage.
He’s already secured tape of former Mayor Richard Hatcher and the civil rights activist Dick Gregory giving speeches in the city.
“As you can see in this trailer I am dedicated to presenting a quality product,” Bowens wrote. “If you are tired of seeing films about Gary, only talking about the blight and other city ills, support this project. I will not let you down.”
Edited by Los N’kredable, the trailer has high production values. It touches upon many topics, including Donald Trump’s pursuit of a riverboat casino in Gary, the failed attempt to build a Michael Jackson Museum and Performing Arts Center, and the city’s partnership with the Richard Daley-backed Maiaco to redevelop blighted properties.
Bowens interviewed former Mayors Thomas Barnes and Scott King, among others, for the project.
