Augusta Shopping Centre was the first of its kind to open in 1995 in Zaragoza in Spain.
Back in 1995, the complex had 140 stores but today, only 30 remain.
But what is that to do with Michael Jackson, you may ask? Simple. In September 24 1996, Michael Jackson was performing his HIStory World Tour at La Romareda but the day before, he decided to do a bit of shopping… at Augusta Shopping Centre.
Not only that was huge for the fans but also for the Shopping Centre! He walked around the complex surrounded by thousands of fans and curious who wanted to get a glimpse of the King of Pop.
Michael purchased his own album and “Macarena” by Los del Rio. While Michael shopped a lot on tours, it’s maybe the only place in Spain he did just that.
Back then, over 230,000 people visited the shopping mall weekly but today, the mall is lifeless with only just few stores remaining and with the full second floor completely closed to the public.
The remaining shop owners blame the failure on the 2008 crisis, internet shopping and they are battling with the mall’s management company to keep going.
It is clear that the place will be soon completely closed so if you are in the area, visit the mall and step into HIStory!
