Justin Timberlake, looking like a dapper Rat Packer in his suit (but not tie) and backed by his retro orchestra the Tennessee Kids. And he worked like an old-school showman, powering through 23 songs in two hours, including a cover of Vegas icon Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” — a Timberlake setlist staple as of late, and a hat-tip to his own Memphis roots.
Justin also mashed up a bit of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Kanye West’s “I Am a God,” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” into his set. (The Boss, who’d been the surprise onstage guest at the Rolling Stones’ Rock in Rio Lisbon gig on Thursday, was in the audience Sunday for Justin’s RiR revue.) But it was two Michael Jackson tributes — neither of which happened to be Justin’s recent posthumous “duet” with Michael, “Love Never Felt So Good” — that were the most moving moments of Justin’s show.
Justin channeled ’70s-disco Michael for a faithful cover of the Jacksons’ “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground),” then later dipped into MJ’s solo catalog for a wistful rendition of the Thriller ballad “Human Nature.” As he asked the delighted crowd to sing along to the latter tune, he prompted, “Loudly! So that he can hear us,” pointing heavenward. With the five-year anniversary of Michael’s death looming later this month, this was a sweet and slightly sad homage.
