You know you’ve made it when you get asked to do a cameo on The Simpsons.
But while the likes Michael Jackson, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Aerosmith all put in an official appearance on the long-running animated show at one stage, Prince is noticeably absent from the list.
However it turns out the writers were desperate to bring on the Purple Rain singer and even wrote a special episode for his consideration back in the nineties.
Unfortunately Prince, who died on April 21 at the age of 57, wasn’t keen on the script and it never got made.
The Simpsons writer Al Jean recently tweeted out a draft version of the episode, which would have likely been screen during the fifth season of the show, which began in 1989.
The plot would have seen mentally ill patient Leon Kompowsky, who featured in the Michael Jackson special which originally aired in 1991, make a return.

While the character was convinced he was the King Of Pop in the memorable episode from season three, this time around he’d believe he was Prince.
However despite a rewrite by Conan O’Brien, the music legend, who had been pitted against Michael for much of his career, opted not to go ahead with it.
‘There is funny stuff but my guess is Prince didn’t want to play second fiddle to MJ, which I get,’ says Al.

Someone resembling the star did appear on screen in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror XIX and Radioactive Man episodes, but they weren’t official guest appearances, so we never really got to see what a Prince / The Simpsons collaboration would look like.
