Bollywood’s go-to fashion designer, Manish Malhotra, recently reminisced about a moment in his career: dressing the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
Taking to Instagram, Malhotra shared a throwback from 1998, when he was given the extraordinary opportunity to design an outfit for Michael Jackson for the Bollywood Awards in New York. In a heartfelt note, he recalled the intense challenge of creating the ensemble in just one day—without any measurements. The post featured a compilation of videos and photos, including a special snapshot of Malhotra alongside the pop icon.
“Throwback: It was an honor and so exciting to dress the fabulous @michaeljackson at the Bollywood Awards in 1998 at Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York. That night, I also won a Costume Award for @karanjohar’s #KuchKuchHotaHai. When I received a message from Kamal Dhandona and the late S P Hinduja, the show’s sponsors, asking me to style #MichaelJackson, I was beyond thrilled. Wanting to infuse a global touch into the classic sherwani, I designed a shorter sherwani paired with trousers and a shawl/stole in textured handloom, accentuated with woven silk and brocade borders. The entire outfit was crafted in just one day—without any measurements,” Malhotra wrote.
In 2024, Bollywood actor Jaaved Jaffery recalls meeting Michael Jackson at the same event. Check out his story HERE.
