Michael Jackson Book Club Review: “The MJ Journal”

The MJ Journal
Rating: 5/5

The MJ Journal by Paul Dwyer

Paul Dwyer, Author of Humanitarian – The Real Michael Jackson, is back with another incredible book titled The MJ Journal.

The MJ Journal is a total timeline of Michael Jackson’s life from 1958 to 2009 and what I consider a true labor of love for Mr. Dwyer.  As explained on the title page, whilst compiling his first book, Humanitarian – The Real Michael Jackson, Mr. Dwyer gathered all the information he could find on Michael Jackson’s movements into a diary-like digital document that was 500 pages long, inserted photos into the timeline, accurately verified all the information, and created one massive, detailed journal.

Dwyer then fine-tuned his information down to create the final product, The MJ Journal, which is comprised of 368 informative pages. And what a spectacular journal it is!

I was immediately drawn to the book covers, which contain different images and demonstrates as much care went into designing the outside as to that of the details found within.  The imagery on the soft cover is a crown above the title, depicting Michael Jackson as “The King of Pop”.  In the center of the crown is the famous MJ logo, also known as the HIStory logo. Below the logo are five hearts and each heart contain various silhouettes of Michael’s iconic poses. The hardcover image, created by Rasheed Musbah, is of a young, pensive Michael Jackson wearing a crown upon his head and can easily be viewed as a prophetic proclamation of who he would become, thus leading to his eventual title, “The King of Pop”.

Once inside, the journey begins with the introduction which includes Michael Jackson’s birth date followed by the apropos words “a King is born”. The reader then, vicariously accompanies Michael on his arduous daily, weekly, and monthly schedule with the Jackson Five, followed by his solo road to becoming the King of Pop, maintaining that title and beyond. Each page is filled with valuable information on what Michael was doing at any given day in his life, both personally and professionally, accompanied by beautiful pictures which transport you to that particular moment in time. Whether it’s seeing Michael in concert, receiving multiple awards, visiting children at hospitals and orphanages, or simply riding a roller coaster and laughing his head off, the pictures, including faint images behind the text, are the special touch to bringing the timeline alive.

In addition to a detailed timeline and amazing pictures, The MJ Journal also contains tour information covering every musical era of Michael’s career, several printed interviews and even a speech, or two, delivered by the King of Pop himself.

The MJ Journal is a must have for the die-hard fan and I highly recommend it for the non-fan who wants to learn more about Michael Jackson because it is a clear, informative chronology spanning his entire lifetime.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what you find inside.
