On August 29th, Michael Jackson made headlines all over the world once again! What would have been the King of Pop’s 60th birthday gave reason for fans everywhere to celebrate the life of our idol and mark the day that a legend was born. The occasion was titled ‘The Diamond Celebration’ to mark 60 years of the world of Michael Jackson, who is ultimately timeless.
London was no exception and in true British spirit, it was a case of go big or go home. And it went big….13ft to be precise!
Sony Music UK installed a 13ft Diamond Style Crown on the South Bank in honour of the King of Pop. Following its installation the previous evening, it was unveiled at 7am and a group of fans including us guys from MJVibe were there in a Michael t-shirts to tell the world’s media – Michael Jackson will never be forgotten!
The Crown was set on the beautiful South Bank side of the river Thames with an amazing view on the London skyline. encrusted with crystal style diamonds and bold black letters reading “Michael Jackson Diamond Celebration” and of course, Michael’s music was blasting out to allow fans to sing and dance as they wish!
The National Portrait Gallery was also celebrating the King of Pop’s Birthday with their resident DJ from 12noon in the lobby of the “Michael Jackson: On the Wall” Exhibition. The entrance of the National Portrait Gallery was decorated with red balloons featuring Michael’s name and “Diamond” tickets were hidden across the city to allow fans to visit the exhibition for free if they found one. There was also the chance to get a free poster if you managed to moonwalk at the tickets desk.
The exhibition was very busy as people headed to the gallery especially to mark the special occasion. The winner of MJVibe’s 60th Birthday Competition Lydia Kerley was also there after travelling in from Ireland and was eagerly taking in seeing the Dangerous Album Cover in it’s original form!
The National Portrait Gallery went the extra mile with ads across the city: The Dangerous album cover could been seen on buses, billboards, in train and tube stations across the capital. There were also stickers on the pavements encouraging people to moonwalk their way to the gallery!
From 8.40pm, BFI screened Michael Jackson’s cult classic, “Moonwalker” and hundreds of fans spent the evening watching and singing along the 80’s movie. Followed by an after-party full of Michael’s songs and remixes.
For some of us, the day concluded after 21 hours around London celebrating Michael. Memories were made and friendships formed. As is always the case with events associated with Michael, it brings people together of all ages and races through their love of one man and for that we thank him for continuing to inspire the world over the last 60 years.
