We already told you about the new MJ ONE show last August but Cirque Du Soleil just did a full Press Release on the stage of the Mandalay Bay MJ ONE Theatre on December 9 and here what it has been said. Surprisingly Karen Langford wasn’t on stage this time (But she was in Germany for the opening of Das Michael Jackson Musical) and also more technology have been added since our visit!
For over 11 years, Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil has captured the hearts of more than five million fans with over 4,500 unforgettable performances. Celebrating the genius of Michael Jackson, the show continues to mesmerize audiences with its breathtaking blend of music, dance, and cutting-edge artistry.
After a spectacular 10th-anniversary celebration last year, the creative team decided it was time to elevate the show even further. Fans of the King of Pop can now look forward to fresh innovations that bring even more of Michael’s magic to the stage.
“Celebrating a decade of success was truly humbling,” said story creator and director Jamie King. “It showed us how much people love Michael Jackson ONE. That’s when we started imagining ways to expand and enhance the experience, to take the energy of Michael’s music and spirit into the audience, over the people. That’s how this journey began.”
The original team reunited, focusing on three major aspects: budget, timing, and making their vision a reality. According to David Dovell, Senior Director of Production Services, bringing new technology into an established theater was no small feat. “Cirque du Soleil is not in the business of saying no,” he said. “We worked hand-in-hand with the creative team to find ways to integrate these exciting new elements while respecting the space and its challenges.”
Technology Meets Michael’s Magic
One of the standout additions is the introduction of 12 state-of-the-art LED panels called tilt screens, which descend dramatically from the ceiling. “Each screen is about three by two and a half meters and weighs roughly 380 pounds,” Dovell explained. These screens required installing 19 winches and motor control cabinets, showcasing the production team’s commitment to innovation.
But perhaps the most thrilling new feature is the integration of 64 drones—a groundbreaking addition inspired by the Michael Jackson Estate. Jamie King shared the thought process behind this bold choice: “The Estate came to me and asked about drones. I loved the idea and ran with it. In the show, they first appear during the vortex scene, representing Mephisto, the dark force our heroes are battling. Watch closely, and you’ll see moments where the drones try to transform into gold and white—symbolizing Michael’s energy breaking through.”
This is the first time drones have flown over an audience in an indoor production in North America, adding a whole new level of immersion. Unlike outdoor environments, where GPS guides drones, the indoor setting required advanced geofencing technology.
“We’re just scratching the surface with what drones can do,” Dovell said. “They bring Michael’s vision closer to the audience, and we’re excited to explore even more possibilities.”
New Acts and Costumes Bring Fresh Energy
Fans will also be thrilled to see a new diabolo act set to “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.” Led by Jim Chen, a talented coach and choreographer from Taiwan, this act captures the song’s vibrant energy. “Jamie told me the song is like a party with friends on stage,” Chen said. “That gave me the freedom to create something exciting and fun.”
The act, featuring six performers instead of the typical four, integrates seamlessly with dancers, creating a dynamic visual feast. “It’s a challenge to combine diabolo tricks with choreography, but we made it happen through passion and creativity,” Chen added.
The updates don’t stop there—347 new costume pieces were added to the wardrobe, including an upgraded look for the MJ Girls. “Their previous look had three pieces; now, it has 13,” said Veronica Vazquez, Head of Wardrobe. “Our quick-change process and staffing didn’t change, so we had to get creative to make it work. But with Michael’s spirit inspiring us, it was never about whether we could do it—just how we would.”
A Legacy That Lives On
These enhancements aren’t just about wowing audiences—they also engage the performers and creative team in meaningful ways. “Many artists expressed interest in contributing to the updates,” said Kati Renaud, Senior Artistic Director. “It’s important to keep the cast and crew inspired while honoring Michael’s legacy.”
Fans can rejoice knowing that the magic of Michael Jackson ONE is here to stay. MGM Resorts and Cirque du Soleil recently extended the show’s contract to 2030, ensuring many more years of celebrating Michael’s artistry.
And while the updates are already making waves, the creative team isn’t stopping there. “Michael always wanted to give his fans the best show possible,” King said. “We approach every decision with that same spirit. The big question is always: What would Michael do?”
With thrilling new features and a commitment to innovation, Michael Jackson ONE continues to honor the King of Pop in ways that leave fans saying, “He’d be proud.”
