An elegant black and gold military-inspired four-piece suit worn by Michael Jackson at the 1986 American Music Awards will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on October 29. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.
Jackson was famous for his iconic sense of style, in which military suits played a huge role. The suit being auctioned was custom-made by Western Costume for the 1986 American Music Awards. Jackson wore the costume onstage where he joined an all-star cast in performing “We Are the World,” the song Jackson co-wrote with Lionel Richie in 1985 to raise awareness for famine in Africa. “We Are the World” won three Grammys and sold more than 20 million copies. The song is one of less than 30 singles to sell 10 million or more copies.
The black suit has gold colored hardware and trim. The size-28 pants have a gold cord belt and gold stripes running down the side of the pant legs. The shirt, designed by Italian master Fabio Inghirami, has Jackson’s makeup stains on the collar. The label inside the suit jacket featuresJackson’s name.
Bidding for the stage costume begins at $50,000.
