National Historical Landmark status sought for Michael Jackson childhood home

A Statewide preservation group is putting together an application to get Michael Jackson’s childhood home located at 2300 Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana the designation of National Historical Landmark.

Eunice Trotter, director of the Indiana Landmarks Black Heritage Program said “It’s not on the register yet. We’re in the process of applying to get it on the National Register of Historic Places. That makes it a national landmark. And it should be. It’s a distinction that’s given to places of significance throughout the country. It elevates its status on a national level to be a distinctive historic landmark site.”

If successful, the home of the Jackson 5 will be provided with a bronze plaque to display at the landmark, identifying the name and landmark status of the property and the date of designation. But it will also allow the home to receive a limited Federal Grant for preservation and restoration.

Hopefully the application will be successful!
