Propstore to showcase Michael Jackson items at Kingvention

More Michael Jackson items will be auctioned on November 15 in London by Propstore.

Propstore, an auction house specialised in movie props and costumes had already sold Michael Jackson items from the short film “Thriller”, the movie “Moonwalker” and Pepsi commercials.

Last year, they teamed up with Kingvention to give fans the opportunity to see in person the jacket wore by Michael Jackson during the Pepsi Commercial “Next Generation” in 1984 and “Spike” the rabbit costume from “Moonwalker”.

Propstore is back at Kingvention for the first US event in Los Angeles on October 12 with now more Michael Jackson items that fans attending the event will be able to get close and personal with.

So what fans will be able to see at Kingvention?

Michael Jackson’s 1987 Pepsi Commercial Wire Rig Jacket

Michael Jackson’s wire-rig jacket from Pepsi’s “The Chase” commercial, released in 1987. The Pepsi commercial was filmed soon after the release of the pop star’s hit single “Bad”, with a Pepsi-themed remix of the song used as the soundtrack. Split into four parts, the advert shows Jackson performing on stage and attempting to leave the arena while being mobbed by paparazzi and fans. It features action-packed sequences, including a ski jump. Different versions of Jackson’s outfit were created for specific shots, with this one produced for stunt sequences that involved a wire rig. The jacket originally came from the collection of Jackson’s personal costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, which was auctioned in 2012.

The black woollen double-breasted jacket features a red armband on the right sleeve, buckled leather straps on the right shoulder, and a gold bullion style embroidered crown emblem on the chest. It retains its original Western Costume Co. label inside the interior pocket, which features Jackson’s name and the word “Rigged” typewritten in black. The label also displays “2242-I” and the handwritten word “Big”. There are intentional slits on the shoulder seams and lower down on the side seams (on both the exterior and lining) to allow a harness and wires to be attached to Jackson. One of the slits on the shoulder and one on the side seam has been hand stitched closed. The stitching along the bottom hem on the lining has come undone in places and there is some minor fraying around the edges of the embroidered emblem.

Lot 721, Julien’s The Collection of Tompkins and Bush: Michael Jackson Auction, 2nd December 2012

£25,000-50,000

Michael Jackson’s Fedora

A fedora that was part of Michael Jackson’s personal collection. The fedora became one of Jackson’s signature clothing items during his reign as the King of Pop, and he had multiple fedoras styled in various ways. In 1992, Jackson gifted this particular hat to Wayne Nagin, a former security guard for MJJ Productions, who worked with the singer for over 20 years.

The black woollen fedora is decorated with a black grosgrain ribbon, and the internal leather sweatband features “Michael Jackson” in gold-coloured text. A loose internal label is marked size “Large”. There is a minor mark on the sweatband near the text, and the lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Nagin.

£5,000-10,000

The Omer Bhatti Collection: Michael Jackson’s Custom-made Bubbles Hand-puppet Doll

A custom-made puppet doll of Michael Jackson’s pet chimpanzee Bubbles, owned by the King of Pop himself. This lot comes from the personal collection of Norwegian rapper Omer Bhatti, who was personally gifted this puppet by Jackson at his Neverland Ranch.

By this time, Jackson no longer had Bubbles, and the puppet was displayed on a shelf inside Jackson’s memorabilia room at Neverland. The Bubbles doll always stood out to Bhatti and was particularly significant, as his favourite animal was a chimpanzee. Jackson also called Bhatti “Little Monkey”, later nicknamed “Monk”.

This rubber puppet doll was specifically made for Jackson, and the design includes an outfit that Bubbles wore. “© 1995 Mask Illusions – Made in Mexico” is imprinted on the doll’s lower back. The puppet displays some minor wear and cracking to the paint finish, and there are two splits in the rubber, meaning the puppet is fragile in places. The lot comes presented on a custom display stand and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Bhatti. Dimensions (displayed): 17 cm x 20 cm x 41 cm (6.75” x 7.75” x 16”)

£3,000-6,000

Additional provenance:

This lot comes from the personal collection of Norwegian rapper and dancer Omer Bhatti, who established himself through touring and numerous television appearances. In 1996, Bhatti met his idol Michael Jackson in Tunisia. After being impressed by Bhatti’s dance moves, Jackson became his mentor, spending time with him while travelling and at Neverland. This led to a lasting connection between the Bhatti and Jackson families, which remained strong until Jackson’s death in 2009.

The Omer Bhatti Collection: Michael Jackson’s Black Corduroy Shirt

A custom-made black corduroy shirt previously owned and worn by Michael Jackson. Jackson was pictured wearing his black corduroy shirt over several years, including during the Bad Tour rehearsals at the Pensacola Civic Centre, Florida, in early 1988. He also wore it in May 1998 when he visited Namibia, where he met with President Sam Nujoma and spoke at The Southern African Economic Forum.

This lot comes from the personal collection of Norwegian rapper and dancer Omer Bhatti. It was personally gifted to Bhatti by Jackson at his Neverland Ranch, and the shirt came from Jackson’s memorabilia room. Bhatti can be seen wearing the shirt with Jackson in photographs taken at Jackson’s child’s second birthday party.

A recognisable piece of the King of Pop’s custom wardrobe, this black corduroy shirt has red-and-gold satin embellishments on the collar tips and matching-coloured epaulettes. A pocket adorns the right side of the chest, and seven metal buttons decorated with a coat of arms are affixed down the front. There are no size or maker labels, and the garment displays minor loose threads. However, it remains in excellent overall condition considering its age. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Bhatti.

Michael Jackson’s Autographed “You Were There” Sammy Davis Jr. 60th Anniversary Celebration Loafers

A pair of autographed loafers worn by Michael Jackson during his performance on the Sammy Davis Jr. 60th Anniversary Celebration television special. The show was taped on 13 November 1989 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and featured several celebrity appearances. Jackson performed “You Were There”, which he co-wrote with Buzz Kohan the day before the recording, as a tribute to Davis. Jackson originally donated these loafers to conductor and producer Glen Roven, to sell at a fundraising event.

Both soles of these black leather Florsheim tassel loafers are autographed in black ink by Jackson. The loafers also feature wooden and leather soles which appear to have been scored. The autograph is tricky to see in places due to wear on the underside of the shoes. The lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from MJJ Productions, a signed letter from Roven detailing the lot’s history and how he worked on the special, Rover’s all-access pass from the event, and two printed promotional images.

The autographs in this lot have been professionally authenticated by expert Garry King; see notice in the Buyer’s Guide.
