Get ready, Michael Jackson fans! The highly anticipated Australian premiere of the Tony Award-winning MJ: The Musical is set to moonwalk into the Sydney Lyric Theatre in February 2025, with Broadway sensation Roman Banks leading the charge.
Banks, who made history as the first African American performer to play the title role in Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen, brings his electrifying talent and charisma to the role of the King of Pop. After Dear Evan Hansen, Banks shone on screen in Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and wowed audiences across the United States while starring in the first national tour of MJ: The Musical.
Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, who is at the helm of the production, had nothing but praise for Banks, stating, “Sydney won’t know what hit it when Roman explodes onto the stage. His artistry and interpretation of the role are astonishing. We’re so lucky to have him lead our company in Australia.”
This will mark Banks’ Australian debut, and he is thrilled to bring the magic of Michael Jackson’s legacy down under. “Starring in the first national tour of MJ: The Musical across the United States was a dream come true,” said Banks. “This creative team has given me the ultimate gift in playing such an extraordinary role. Not only that, but they’ve created a vehicle to celebrate the artistry and inspiration of one of the most significant Black performers the world has ever seen. I’m deeply enthralled for another opportunity to share this show, music, and captivating story with Australia.”
Joining Roman Banks is Brisbane-born talent Liam Damons, making his professional debut as the young adult Michael Jackson. The cast is rounded out with an incredible lineup of performers:
- Josslynn Hlenti Afoa as Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother
- Conlon Bonner playing Tito Jackson and Quincy Jones
- Derrick Davis as Joseph Jackson and Rob, Michael’s tour director
- Yashith Fernando as Alejandro
