The San Francisco Jazz Collective will perform the music of Michael Jackson, who is considered the King of Pop, Monday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre.
Featuring an ensemble of eight of all-star, award-winning jazz musicians, the group, based in San Francisco, has added the Jazz SLC to its touring list for the 2015-16 concert series.
Gordon Hanks, founder of Jazz SLC, considers this concert one of the most important events in this year’s lineup. “The SF Jazz Collective is like an all-star basketball game,” Hanks said. “You get to see the best of the best all at once.”
Founded in 2004 by SF Jazz, the project was designed to showcase the finest performers and composers of jazz. Musicians selected to join the collective are given a multiweek residency where they can explore the boundaries of jazz without interruption. Once the musicians have completed their collaboration, they take these new compositions and arrangements to the stage beginning with a concert in the Bay Area at the SF Jazz Center in San Francisco. There is also an educational component with jazz workshops, partnerships and school programs to young children and adults in the Bay Area.
“They’ve taken music from such artists as Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea and contemporized them to appeal to a new audience,” Hanks said. “And this year, with the music of Michael Jackson, I think the audience will be stunned by the talent and the retooling of one of pop culture’s greatest icons, Michael Jackson.”
This year’s touring lineup features one of the founding members of the SF Jazz Collective, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, tenor saxophonist David Sanchez, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Obed Calvaire. Replacing the former member of the collective, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, is the young Sean Jones whose has an impressive resume as a musician, trumpeter, composer and educator.
