To be honest, I did not know who Loren Legarda was until she posted a photo of her and Michael Jackson on her social media.
She said:
“Did you know that I had the chance to meet the King of Pop, Michael Jackson? I remember the security being very tight, but I got close to him with a friend’s help, way back then, as a young journalist. He even warmly greeted me when I introduced myself and he willingly engaged in an interview.
I learned of his loving and caring nature when he expressed his interest in helping sick Filipino children, which made me feel grateful to have met him!”
Loren was, at the time, a journalist in Manila, Philippines, and when in 1996, while on Tour for HIStory in the country, he visited in December an hospital and Loren managed to get a quick interview with the King of Pop.
Check out this news feed from back then:
The History World Tour concerts in Parañaque were a huge success, with 145,000 Filipinos turning up to watch him live on Dec. 8 and 10.
But where is she now and what is she doing? Well, this is why her post about Michael Jackson is important as Loren, real name Lorna Regina Bautista Legarda, is no longer a journalist but she is a Filipina politician. She is also an environmentalist, cultural worker, and is currently serving the country as a Senator and the president pro tempore of the Senate of the Philippines since 2022.
Loren’s high political position in the Philippines gives her story and positivity about Michael Jackson an importance that we can all appreciate.
