Tyler Parker, a 13-year-old Columbus resident was born with Alagille syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that can affect multiple organ systems in the body, including the liver, heart, skeleton, eyes and kidneys. Liver damage is a signature feature of Alagille syndrome.
“We knew at some point he was going to need a transplant,” said Tyler’s mom, Holly Parker, 34. “It wasn’t if — it was when.”
The family got the call about Tyler’s new liver in the early hours of March 12, 2020, after waiting on the transplant list for 15 months, and he received a new liver later that day at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
“His body is thriving better,” said Holly. “He has more energy. He looks and feels like a different kid. It really is amazing.”
“We had probably the greatest blessing that we’re ever going to have, One of the best gifts I’ve ever received is my son getting a second chance at life.”
Tyler’s new liver allows him to continue dancing to Michael Jackson songs, especially his favorite song “Bad.” He also enjoys going on bike rides, and his doctor says he can eventually play sports.
“I do like playing at the playground,” Tyler said. “I like the slide, and my favorite part of the park is the swings.”
